When the weather outside is frightful during this time of the year, many around the world find pleasure and delight in hot drinks. The warmth of a perfectly made drink can even penetrate straight into your soul! In the USA, most would likely point to hot cocoa as the most popular warm drink during the winter and for good reason. With sales of cocoa bombs taking off lately, it’s never been more popular to warm up with a mug of delicious cocoa. But there are also other drinks, popular throughout the world, that will not only warm you up, but also bring an international flair to your home. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular warm winter drinks found in homes around the globe!
Mulled Wine
Warm wine has been enjoyed throughout Europe for ages as a great way to warm up during a brisk, chilly day. In Germany, France, and many other countries throughout the region, people will also add mulling spices to their wine. The mulling mixture can vary depending on regional tastes, but will usually consist of cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus peel, cloves, ginger, and other seasonal ingredients. The result is a drink that, even at first taste, will remind one of the holiday season – and mulled wine represents just that for millions of Europeans.
Rooibos Tea
Tea is also a popular drink year-round throughout the world. During the winter in South Africa, many turn to rooibos tea to help them stay warm. Rooibos tea, also known as red bush tea, is made using leaves native to South Africa and is an herbal tea – meaning it does not have caffeine like green or black tea do. The leaves are fermented, which turns them red and leads to the distinctive look and flavor of rooibos. South Africans consume rooibos tea in the same ways as the English enjoy their black tea – plain, with milk and sugar, or in latte form.
Hot Toddy
With roots in both India and the United Kingdom, the hot toddy is arguably one of the most popular hot winter drinks in the world. Families of all types use the hot toddy as an at-home remedy to relieve the symptoms of the flu and common cold. It is usually made with whiskey, boiled water, honey or sugar, lemon juice, and spices such as cinnamon. If you’re feeling a little under the weather, a hot toddy before bed may be just what you need to start feeling better the next morning.
