Originally built as a hunting lodge in 1623, Versailles is now one of the largest and most luxurious palaces in the world. With 700 rooms, 2,000 windows, and 67 staircases, Versailles is capable of holding 20,000 people at once. Visitors travel the world to see the former home of Louis XIII, Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette, and to witness the breathtaking display of classic French architecture. The holidays are a particularly beautiful time in Versailles, as tourists can enjoy a variety of charming seasonal touches, such as the Versailles Christmas Market.
Versailles Christmas Market 2017
Locals and tourists can enjoy Christmas markets throughout Paris during the holiday months, but one of the most spectacular markets is just an hour from the city. This year, fabulous nighttime illuminations will dazzle the window displays in historic Versailles. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere on foot, or by horse and carriage!
Attractions and Concerts
Just 200 yards from the palace, visitors can strap on their ice skates and freestyle on an eco-friendly ice rink. The ice rink has a synthetic surface, and operates without water or electricity, meeting requirements of sustainable development. Skaters can enjoy refreshments such as mulled wine and hot chocolate!
Concerts & Shows
The Royal Chapel of the Palace of Versailles has organized an entire series of concerts and shows during the holiday season. The Royal Opera will host two ballets, including Ballet Preljocal and Beauty and the Beast. Experience the Royal Stables, and witness the famous equestrian show “La Voie de l’Ecuyer.” You can view the entire calendar of events here.
Holiday Treats
The confectionary, “La Varenne” will organize taste testings inspired by one of Louis XIV’s personal chefs. Visit historic Versaille every weekend in December to discover the French “art de Vivre” and other culinary delights.
