Though it might be synonymous with romance, Paris has a lot of quirky secrets that only add to its appeal!
Otherwise known as the City of Light, Paris is one of the most interesting European capitals, not just because of its culture, art, history, or cuisine. Though it might be synonymous with romance, Paris has a lot of quirky secrets that only add to its appeal. We at AESU have many upcoming tours that will stop in Paris, so don’t hesitate to sign up for one today! Read on to learn more about Paris before you visit!
The Louvre is Very Big
With millions of visitors every year, the Louvre Museum is one of the most famous museums on the planet. It is home to the Mona Lisa, but there are over 35,000 art pieces on display here. However, in the museum’s entire collection, there are around 460,000. If you took 30 seconds each for viewing time, you would still need 35 days to see them all. If you’d like to visit the Louvre, make sure to buy your tickets in advance and carve out enough time to see whichever art pieces you want.
The Eiffel Tower Should Not Be There
Believe it or not, the most iconic structure in Paris was only meant to be a temporary monument. It was France’s way of showing off its superior technology and construction skills, and when it was built in 1889, it was very unpopular. Residents and other seniors protested it, and the media called it a “monstrosity.” Now, over 100 years later, it is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world. When you visit Paris, you can go to the very top of the tower for some of the best views in the city. You can even enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne while at the top of the tower!
There Aren’t Any Stop Signs in the City
Yes, you read that right. Despite being one of the most popular capitals in Europe, Paris streets don’t have any stop signs. The one and only stop used to be located at the very end of a construction company’s drive in the 16th arrondissement, but it was removed in 2016. Throughout the rest of the city, the right gets priorities.
You Could Visit an Old Guillotine Spot
Though you will not find a guillotine in the streets, you can find five concrete spots where former guillotines were located at the close corner of Roquette and La Croix-Faubin Street. They are in front of a former prison and it used to be used for public executions.
