Porto is Portugal’s second-largest city, and it is a ‘must-see’ destination for sure. Known for the historic Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a student of Gustav Eiffel and port wine production, Porto is a city with something different to enjoy on each street. Porto is even said to have inspired JK Rowling to introduce several themes into the Harry Potter series as she lived here during her time writing the first novel of the series. Wine Tastings
Since port wine is the chief export of Porto, it only makes sense to prioritize wine tasting as a part of your journey. There are several top-quality wineries in Porto that offer exclusive tastings and tours in the Vila Nova de Gaia area just across the Douro River. Ferreira Cellars, a winery opened in 1751 by a family of notable winemakers in Portugal, has long played an influential role in Porto’s winemaking history and offers tours and tastings to travelers. Taylor’s Port also offers tastings in a gorgeous garden with incredible views of the city from above.
Bolhão Market
If you are looking to enjoy the shopping and cuisine of Porto, then Bolhão Market provides an adventure for the senses. Bolhão Market is an open-air market that dates back to 1893 and features vendors who offer a variety of fresh bread, produce, cheeses, and more. There is no better place to find the perfect accompaniment to a rich glass of port, or a true taste of the local Portuguese culture.
Avenue of the Allies
The main boulevard of Porto is Avenida dos Aliados, or ‘Avenue of the Allies’, where you can find Porto’s marble town hall. The avenue goes through the heart of Porto, just southeast of Bolhão Market, and is named in honor of the Allies of World War I. The Avenue of the Allies is known for hosting street performers, artists, and festivals. It is the perfect place for shopping or relaxing at a café to do some people watching.
The Beaches of Porto
Any coastal town is bound to offer amazing beaches, and Porto is no exception. Simply take the train out to the coast, and many beautiful beaches await you. One of the best beach areas in Porto is Foz, which is so much more than just a beach. You can enjoy sunbathing in small secluded areas, explore the promenades, visit the Serralves gardens, or explore some of the many beachside bars and restaurants. Some other popular beaches on the coast of Vila Nova de Gaia include Praia do Molhe, Praia da Luz, Praia do Senhor da Pedra, Praia de Matosinhos, and Praia de Lavradores.
