From golden beaches on the southern tip to trendy townships in Johannesburg, there is never a dull moment in South Africa. From baboon spotting in forested canyons, swimming with penguins in beautiful waters, and going on a safari trip in a few of Africa’s finest national parks. We at AESU have our South Africa Explorer trip this year, so we highly recommend checking out this stunning country. Read on to learn more!
Johannesburg and Soweto
In Johannesburg, our tour will have a group fine dining and gin-tasting experience. This city is the economic capital of Africa and the gateway to Southern Africa, with a multicultural mixture of traditional architecture and ultra-modern skyscrapers, old-style medicine shops, colorful markets, and Chinese restaurants. We will also take a visit to Soweto, the township about half an hour west of the heart of Johannesburg. The best way to experience the modern and true face of Soweto is by visiting with the locals. Home to more than a million people, Soweto is the only area in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners once lived. Here, you can visit the Apartheid Museum, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and the Nelson Mandela House as well.
Greater Kruger National Park
Join the park rangers for more exciting drives in safari vehicles and talks about wildlife conservation efforts. The Greater Kruger National Park is a stunning safari home to the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga, reaching a very impressive altitude of 6,000 feet. You can witness the breathtaking God’s Window, offering nice views of lush mountains, canyons, rock formations, baobab trees, and incredible waterfalls. Our tour’s adventure continues with a visit to the Blyde River Canyon Reserve, which is the world’s third-largest canyon. It is a visual feast with stunning landscapes and other iconic attractions such as the Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
Cape Town
Cape Town is another famous location we will visit. Cape Town was named after the legendary 17th-century ship that met its end at the “Cape of Storms” on its way back to Holland from Jakarta. We will enjoy a lunch of local seafood with more stunning seaside views and visit the Boulders Beach Penguin Colony. This is home to seals and penguins that waddle up and down the beach. Cape Town has plenty of incredible dining options as well, so don’t be afraid to check out any of the great restaurants there!
