Destination Spotlight for 2024 – Peru

Destination Spotlight for 2024 – Peru

Peru is a beautiful country with much more to it than Machu Picchu.

Peru is a beautiful country with much more to it than Machu Picchu. It is a country with layers. You will find coastal towns, dune-filled deserts, and villages hidden up in the mountains. Peru is home to some of the best food in the world. Fresh fish, fried street food, and other innovative Peruvian delights. So, while Picchu might be one of the highlights, there is much more to do and see. We at AESU have our Peru’s Inca Trail: The Sacred Valley tour this year for eight days, so read on to learn more!

Starting in Cusco

Upon landing at the Cusco airport, you’ll make your way to the hotel. Once in Cusco, enjoy the city and all it has to offer. It’s a good idea to start adjusting to the altitude in preparation for the trek. You can consider joining an optional excursion to the nearby archaeological sites. In the evening, our tour will have a welcome orientation and dinner, where you’ll get to learn a bit more about our trip while being entertained by local dance performances. You can then explore Ollantaytambo, which is a small town built around an impressive Incan fortress and soaring peaks of the Andes. You can climb over two hundred steps to admire the stunning monoliths that make up the Temple of the Sun for a stunning view and a closer look. This was the site of a rare Inca victory over the Spanish in 1538, all led by Manco Inca. After some free time to visit the town and market, we will continue to our hotel for the overnight stay in the Sacred Valley.

Machu Picchu

Later on in the trip, we’ll hike up to the Machu Picchi ruins, an infamous national sanctuary and one of the new seven Wonders of the World. Our local experts show us the breathtaking and mysterious ruins as we climb on the top of Mount Huayna Picchu, Quechua, for “Young Mountain,” on the eastern side of Central Cordillera. This peak shelters one other archaeological site, the Temple of the Moon, which is connected to Machu Picchu. On our trip, we’ll then return to Aguas Calientes for a Peruvian fare lunch before boarding a train back to Ollantaytambo. The last destination is back in Cusco, where we will check into our hotel for our last night here.
