Galapagos Traditional Foods and Dishes to Try While in Ecuador

When you think of the Galapagos Islands, you probably think of the archipelago’s wildlife and its links to Charles Darwin, but did you know they have a great selection of culinary offerings?

When you think of the Galapagos Islands, you probably think of the archipelago’s wildlife and its links to Charles Darwin, but did you know they have a great selection of culinary offerings? This remote destination boasts enticing gastronomy that draws a lot on seafood from its nearby waters. It is also influenced by the traditions of Andean, Spanish, and Amazonian cuisines, which have all left their mark on Ecuador’s taste buds.

Scattered around both sides of the equator, the Galapagos Islands are around 550 miles off the coast of Ecuador. They became part of the country after it became a sovereign state in 1830. In this blog, we will discuss a few of the top dishes to keep an eye out for while you enjoy the stunning scenery, beaches, and wildlife of the Galapagos Islands! Check out AESU’s Galapagos Eco Experience in our short breaks/young alumni website section departing April 2025.

Arroz Marinero

Arroz mariner is Galapagos Island’s most well-known rice dish, and it is used for a hearty lunch or dinner. It consists of different shellfish like mussels and clams, which are combined with vegetables and infused with flavorful juices. Onion, yucca, and plantains are common additions, like chili and avocado. Once cooked, this tasty mix is served over rice that has been infused with pepper, garlic, coriander, and achiote, a spice that is taken from seeds of an achiote tree and gives this dish a red tinge. In a few restaurants, you will find a special version of arroz mariner made with shrimp.

Seco

While a few of the Galapagos Island’s dishes focus on seafood, this is one for fans of meats. But it is not the choice or cut of meat that makes the dish what it is, but the fragrant and flavorful sauce. Lamb, chicken, beef, and goat could be used to make seco, with the meats and sauce served with rice, typically with a side of fried plantations and slices of avocado. Seco is not only filling, but it is also widely available across the islands, and it is typically a cheap dish to eat.

Ceviche

Ceviche is found in the Central and South America and it is usually made using raw, fresh fish that is cured with citrus juice and accented with a bit of chili. In the Galapagos Islands, you will find traditional fish ceviche and versions created with squid, crab, and octopus.
